Substances Around Your Home That Can Improve Your Oral Health

If you are trying to find new ways to keep your teeth healthy, you may not have to search the shelves of your local drugstore. In fact, there are many different substances around your home that may be able to help you maintain your oral health. Here are a few of them:

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is often used to help disinfect minor cuts and abrasions. However, the liquid, which is usually presented in a 3-percent concentration, can also help you maintain the health of your teeth and gums. Hydrogen peroxide can help kill oral bacteria that are associated with bad breath and cavity development.

To use hydrogen peroxide as a disinfecting mouth rinse, add the peroxide to an equal amount of water. Then, place it in your mouth and rinse as you would with a conventional mouthwash.

You may notice that the peroxide solution foams a bit. This is due to the release of oxygen from the solution. The oxygen is especially deadly to anaerobic bacteria, which are associated with the emission of volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad breath.

Hydrogen peroxide is also known for its mild bleaching abilities. Thus, regularly rinsing with the solution can also promote whiter teeth.

Baking Soda

Baking soda, what is a common ingredient in your kitchen recipes, can also assist with your dental health. Baking soda has an alkaline pH of about 8.3. Thus, when introduced in the mouth, baking soda can help neutralize bacterial acid that causes tooth decay.

Bacterial acid develops in the mouth as bacteria feed on carbohydrates that are deposited as you eat or drink. The acid is a byproduct of the bacterial digestive process, which is called glycolysis. As tooth enamel is exposed to bacterial acid, it is dissolved and weakened. Consequently, it becomes more susceptible to cavities.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is considered a healthy oil, especially when it is not heated excessively. Many people use it in the preparation of salad dressings. However, cooking is not the only use for this oil.

Olive oil can also be used to help remove oral bacteria from the mouth. To use the oil in this manner, simply place about a spoonful of the liquid in your mouth and move it about for several minutes. As the oil moves about the oral cavity, it collects bacteria. The trapped bacteria are released when the oil is spit from the mouth. After spitting the oil out, brush your teeth as usual.
