Embarassed About Your Teeth? 4 Options To Repair Your Smile

Priscilla Hansen

If you are self-conscious about your smile due to discolored teeth, you have a variety of options to make your smile bright and shiny again. You can do some at-home treatments, or you can have your teeth professionally treated. The following are some things you can consider to restore your smile:

Teeth Whitening

Having your teeth whitened is one of the fastest ways to brighten your smile. You can utilize an at-home kit, which is a cheaper option. You can also visit your dental office to have it done professionally. This option is more costly, but typically works more quickly and is more effective.

Bonding

Bonding is described as the process of applying resin to the teeth that will repair chips or hide discoloration. The dentist will choose the shade that best matches your other teeth. He or she will apply the resin to the original tooth and shape it. The resin is set by ultraviolet light until it is fully hardened. After this step, the dentist will polish the area to smooth the teeth. This is a painless procedure that can be completed in one office visit.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin layers that are made to fit onto the front of your original teeth. The dentist will take impressions of your mouth and design the veneers in a lab. They will instantly change the color and shape of your teeth. Veneers are not permanent, but they can last for many years if they are properly cared for. You may need to replace the veneers from typical damage that can occur over time, such as chips and scratches from mouth injuries or teeth grinding. You may need to wear a mouth guard when you are sleeping to maintain the integrity of the veneers.

Implants

A dental implant is used when an entire tooth needs to be replaced. They are constructed from titanium and are implanted into the root of the absent tooth. The orthodontist will cut the gums and fuse the implant into the jawbone. This is a somewhat invasive surgical procedure that will require several months to complete. However, this is the most permanent option. The implant is virtually indestructible and should not fall out because the jawbone will grow around the implant to secure it in place.

Be sure to discuss your options with a dentist like those at Oral Surgery Associates Inc. Don't be embarrassed about your smile. Any of these treatments can be beneficial. Discuss your wants and needs with your dentist to design a plan that will work best for you.
