3 Ways to Improve Your Teeth & Smile

Priscilla Hansen

Your smile is one of the first things people see about you. However, the condition of your teeth and gums can additionally affect your health. To benefit your oral health and your appearance, here are three tips to help you accomplish this.

Straighten Your Teeth

For many years society associates a full set of straight teeth with a healthy mouth, as a full set of straight teeth can likely indicate a person's overall oral health. There are several options today that you can take advantage of to straighten your teeth.

One of the first methods many people use is to see their dentist and orthodontist to straighten their teeth. Besides traditional wire and metal braces, there are other types of braces, including clear braces and braces that are placed on the backs of your teeth so they are not visible to others. You can also get a set of molded plastic aligners from your orthodontist that progressively move your teeth to their appropriately-straight places.

If you don't have the budget or time to visit an orthodontist, you can order clear teeth aligners through the mail. After taking a mold of your teeth at home and sending it into the clear aligner company, the clear-aligner company will send you your plastic alignment molds for your teeth.

Keep Your Gums and Teeth Healthy

One of the best ways to keep your teeth and gums looking healthy is to take steps to keep them healthy. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist regularly for dental check-ups. Depending on your health, you may need to see your dentist more often than others who don't have a high risk of dental disease. For example, if you have diabetes or smoke, your risk of dental disease is increased, so talk to your dentist about the frequency of your dental check-ups.

Regular dental check-ups are important because your dentist can clean your teeth of any hardened tartar that has built up since your last check-up. Tartar results when you don't fully brush off plaque from your teeth each day, and it can only be scraped from your teeth, which your dentist will do at your appointment.

When you don't have the tartar removed, it builds up and attracts bacteria that causes oral cavities. Tartar also irritates your gums and causes them to become inflamed and recede back, causing additional problems and unhealthy teeth and gums.

Whiten Your Teeth

In addition to keeping your teeth and gums healthy with daily cleaning and maintenance, you can also whiten your teeth using natural products. There are many whitening toothpastes, mouthwashes, and pastes you can buy at most grocery stores to whiten your teeth. Unfortunately, many of these over-the-counter products use harsh chemicals that can cause your teeth to become sensitive. You can accomplish the same whitening results using products you may already have at home in your kitchen.

Oil pulling is a practice that you use coconut oil to swish inside your mouth. The coconut oil whitens your teeth in addition to many other healthful benefits to your mouth. Oil pulling also removes plaque from your teeth, reduces inflammation in your gums, and removes harmful bacteria from your mouth by trapping it within the oil. If you don't have coconut oil, you can also use sesame or sunflower oil to receive the same benefits.

To practice oil pulling, each morning before you eat or drink anything, or brush your teeth, take one to two teaspoons of coconut oil into your mouth and let it melt. Swish the oil around your teeth, tongue, and all around inside your mouth for 20 minutes. Just be sure you don't swallow any of the oil, as it will contain toxins and bacteria from your mouth.

After 20 minutes, spit the oil into the trash and rinse your mouth with warm water. Follow this by brushing your teeth.

Use these tips to help you increase the appearance and health of your teeth and gums. To learn more about these options, contact a local cosmetic dentist.
