How To Keep Teeth Clean When Wearing Braces

Priscilla Hansen

Braces are an excellent method for straightening crooked teeth, but they are not something that you have installed and forget about for the next year. Braces require more care when it comes to cleaning your teeth because you need to work around the braces to get food that can be trapped between their many parts. Follow these tips to ensure that your teeth stay clean with those braces installed.

Buy The Proper Toothbrush

Getting braces means that you'll need to change up the kind of toothbrush that you use since there are kinds that are designed to work with people that have braces. They often referred to as orthodontic toothbrushes, and they resemble a scrub brush that you would use in your kitchen, but much smaller. There are bristles that surrounds a pick, which will make it easy to stick between the wires of your braces.

The reason for using this type of toothbrush is because of how easily food gets trapped underneath or behind the wires and brackets. You can easily scrub around these items, getting the small bristles of the orthodontic toothbrush in those hard to reach places. Not using this brush will allow the food to collect on your teeth, which will eventually lead to cavity formation.

Learn To Floss Properly

You may have braces on your teeth, but you still need to floss every single day. Thankfully, there are special tools that allow you to get the floss underneath the wires. Instead of trying to poke the floss through on your own, use a dental floss threader. It will make the process of threading much easier, making you more likely to floss than to skip it all together, which results in cleaner teeth.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

While your orthodontist will require that you come back regularly for the braces to be adjusted, this does not count as your semi-annual cleaning. You still need to make visits to your dentist to have your teeth cleaned and inspected. It is possible to have a cleaning done with braces on your teeth, so it will not be for nothing. There are still plenty of exposed surfaces of the teeth left that can decay.

For more tips on how to keep your teeth clean when wearing braces, speak to your orthodontist. They may have recommendations for other cleaning techniques that you were not aware of. At the very least, you'll get confirmation that the things you're currently doing are correct.
