Why It's A Good Idea For Your Teeth To Use Chewing Gum

Priscilla Hansen

You may already use chewing gum to help freshen your breath after eating a bad smelling food, but were you aware that there are some oral health benefits of chewing gum? Your dentist may recommend chewing a sugarless variety of gum for the following reasons.

Keeping Your Teeth Clean

It's not always practical to brush after each snack or meal during the day, which is why chewing sugarless gum can be a viable alternative. There are food particles stuck to your teeth after eating, which can cause tooth decay if not cleaned off your teeth. Chewing on gum actually helps your mouth generate more saliva, which washes over your teeth and helps remove those particles. Having gum on hand to chew after meals will play a role in keeping your teeth clean, which helps reduce the chance of having tooth decay.

Preventing Plaque Buildup

Your mouth actually prevents plaque from building up in your mouth by having a proper chemical balance. Every time you drink or eat, that chemical balance is altered. Producing more saliva by chewing gum helps bring the chemical balance back to normal, since it will release phosphate and calcium found within your saliva. Regularly chewing sugarless gum will help balance the chemical levels and prevent plaque from forming during the day.

Preventing Halitosis

While gum is great for freshening breath after a meal, some people happen to suffer from having bad breath all the time. It's a health condition called halitosis, and chewing sugarless gum is a great way to fight it. That's because halitosis happens to people because there is a bacterial level imbalance in their mouths. If there's too much bacteria, it will cause the person to have a bad odor come from their mouth. Increasing the amount of saliva they produce will help remove the bacteria, which essentially prevents halitosis from happening. If you make it a habit to chew sugarless gum during the day, you could help take some steps that prevent halitosis from being noticeable to others.

Strengthening The Jaw Bone

Were you aware that your jaw bone requires stimulation for it to be healthy? That's why people that are missing teeth can have problems with their jawbone deteriorating. Chewing on gum helps put pressure on your jawbone, which actually makes it stronger.

Not sure of the benefits of chewing sugarless gum? Make sure to ask your dentist during your next checkup, and see what they think about it.
