Cosmetic Dental Services For Teeth That Are Too Large Or Too Small

Priscilla Hansen

Many people are uncomfortable with the look of their smile. They may feel that their teeth or gums are not as attractive as they could be. For people who are interested in improving the appearance of their smile, cosmetic dental services are available.

Cosmetic dental applications are used to improve the appearance of the teeth and gums, even when the patient desires to change the size of their teeth. Here are a few services that can help your smile look more attractive when your teeth appear larger or smaller than you would like.

Gingival Contouring

The shape of your gums can affect the look of your smile. If the gums cover a lot of the teeth, they can cause the teeth to appear small, and the smile may seem gummy. Additionally, if the gingival tissue recedes, the teeth may appear larger than normal, causing the smile to look toothy.

To reduce the size of the gums, the dentist can cut away excess tissue, sculpting the soft tissues into a more attractive configuration. In some cases, a bit of the underlying bone may also be removed, depending on the cosmetic wishes of the patient. The more extensive the sculpting process, the longer the required recovery period.

If you want your gums extended to cover the portions of the teeth that have been exposed by recession, additional tissue can be added to the gums. The added tissue is excised from the roof of the mouth or from other areas of the gums.

Veneers

If you would like to extend the actual size of your teeth, dental veneers can be used. The veneers, which are made from porcelain, are created from an impression of the patient's mouth. The microthin, tooth-shaped pieces of porcelain are cemented to the front of the teeth. As the veneers cover the teeth, teeth that are short can appear longer, changing the look of the smile.

Before the teeth are covered by the veneers, the dentist removes some of the tooth enamel. The amount of enamel removed is approximately equal in thickness to the thickness of the veneers. As a result, the application of the veneers does not extend or alter the natural bite line of the teeth.

Crowns

A dental crown can also be used to increase the size of a tooth. The device, which can be quite a bit larger than the designated tooth, fits over the tooth's natural crown.

If you would like to change the look of your teeth, schedule a consultation with a cosmetic dentist in your local area.
